The tourist who wants to discover the town by walk without haste, listening to anecdotes about Siena’s history, admiring the landscape from a new perspective, should join the Urban Trekking Day, the initiative that involves 35 cities in Italy.
Siena is the pioneer in Italy’s Urban Trekking, a funny activity suitable to each kind of tourist: this year the event will be on Thursday 31st October and we suggest joining it during a stay in Siena for a weekend or more. The idea of Urban Trekking is to respect environment avoiding cars or buses in areas with monuments and historical buildings, and is an alternative route by foot to explore an urban territory.
This is the 10th edition of Urban Trekking Day and in Siena the acme will be on Thursday night: the guided tour will start at 9:30 pm from Piazza del Campo, a 3 km itinerary dedicated to a series of new artworks realized on paving stone. It’s an original project by 12 Italian and foreign artists which carved a drawing or a sentence on paving stone, a way to reveal an itinerary through the alleys and the squares of Siena; we suggest you to wear cozy clothes and to use a flashlight.
Furthermore, Siena celebrates the 10th edition with a series of collateral events from 25th October to 3rd November, a wide program that includes the hot-air balloon flight (the meeting point it will be at Strada dei Tufi at sunrise, the ticket costs 180 € and includes breakfast with typical products), guided tours to the Water Museum, the hidden rooms of Palazzo Pubblico (open for the first time) and Nordic walking tours to discover the fountains of Contradas.
Urban Trekking also offers a photo contest on Instagram social network, if you want to join you have to publish your pictures (related to the cities that take part to Urban Trekking Day) with the hashtag #trekkingurbano, while on 31st October you can use the hashtag #trekkingurbano2013. All the pictures posted with this hashtag will go online on the official website of the event and the 5 most liked pictures on Instagram will be used for posters and promotional material of the next edition.
