Visiting Tuscany, and in particular the province of Siena, is an experience that is very much in tune with wine tasting: in both cases, the time spent admiring and enjoying every aspect is rewarded with beauty and exclusiveness which remain for a long time among our memories.
Many travelers want to know which wine cellars are a must-visit, so we picked 5 wineries, aware that the choice is really difficult and that Tuscany is the land of plenty for top wines.
All the wineries we have selected are easy to reach from Siena and are renowned for the production of DOCG wines, for the guided tastings that they offer in the historic cellars and for the awards received by the most prestigious wine magazines.
Salcheto
The eco-sustainable winery Salcheto, near Montepulciano, is unique in its kind and we talked about it in the article The Salcheto Winery, with an interview and an in-depth look at the history of this particular place.
Don’t miss the chance to visit the vineyards and the cellar named after the stream which lives at the foot of the town of Montepulciano.
Salcheto controls every aspect of the wine production process, reducing gas emissions and reducing their water footprint, resulting in less impact on the environment. For this reason Salcheto is recognized as an eco-sustainable winery.
Contacts: Salcheto, Via di Villa Bianca, 15 Montepulciano (SI), phone + 39 0578 799031, email info@salcheto.it.
Biondi Santi, Tenuta Il Greppo
Did you know that one of the most appreciated wines in the world, the Brunello di Montalcino, was produced for the first time in the Cellars of Biondi Santi? The origins date back to the mid-nineteenth century and the particular climatic conditions of the vineyards, which extend over 47 hectares of Greppo and 105 Pieri, allow to define Brunello Biondi Santi a top wine.
Reserve an opportunity for a guided tour of the wine cellar of Tenuta Il Greppo, including a tasting of Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello Annata and Brunello Riserva, available for a minimum of 2 people up to a maximum of 10.

Abbadia Ardenga Il Poggio
Have you ever been in a “museum cellar”? The Abbadia Ardenga winery offers this experience, as it is an estate that produces exclusively Brunello di Montalcino, and in the past the land belonged to the Piccolomini family.
Today the Estate is made up of 2 parts located in Montalcino, while the museum cellar is located in Torrenieri: here you can admire historical finds such as the tools used by the peasants and the guided tour is the explanation of the techniques of fermentation and refinement of wine and includes wine tasting of the best products of the Estate.
Guided tours are available daily on reservation, write in advance at info@abbadiardengapoggio.it.
Tenuta San Guido
We recommend this Estate since, while being more distant (is located between Livorno and Grosseto, in Maremma) boasts the primacy of being the only one to produce DOC wine Bolgheri Sassicaia, one of the most valuable and expensive in Italy.
If you are eager to learn more about the Super Tuscan wines, a visit to the wine cellar of Tenuta San Guido is a must: here you can enjoy a precious wine surrounded by a magnificent scenery, among the cypresses surrounding the cellar and the view on the nature reserve Rifugio Faunistico Padule di Bolgheri and on the Tyrrhenian coast.

Cecchi
Castellina in Chianti is one of the favorite destinations for those who love Chianti Classico, a DOCG wine symbol of this land. For this reason, we suggest making a stop at the Cecchi cellars, a family that for over 120 years has produced Chianti in the vineyards of Villa Cerna, extended on the first hill that you will see coming from Siena towards Castellina.
The position of the vineyards allows perfect ripeness of the grapes, which produce wines with floral aromas and harmonious flavor, immediately recognizable.
Both vineyards and cellars can be visited with guided tours that include tastings.
For all information please contact Cecchi at +39 0577 54311 or by mail at info@cecchi.net.
