From the 18 July to the 25 August, the 79th edition of the Estate Musicale Chigiana will be held on the fascinating stage of the most beautiful abbeys and churches of Siena and the surrounding province and as protagonists, the most celebrated musicians and their students attending the advanced summer school at the Accademia Chigiana.
Thus, the now established tradition which has taken the Accademia Chigiana to such international fame in the reaching of music now continues.
These summer schools, founded in 1932 by Count Guido Chigi Saracini, are now an annual event with the participation of students from all parts of the world; in 2009 over 50 nations were represented.
The continuity of this programme is due to the quality of the training which covers all main instruments and classical musical styles and also the quality of the teachers — many of whom have been part of the tradition of the Accademia Chigiana for many years and others more recent — but all selected from the best in the world.
Since the first editions, the Chigiana Festival has attracted students and teachers representing the great interpreters of the 20th Century and many young talented contemporary musicians have studied in Siena thanks to the considerable number of bursaries for their studies. Furthermore, the Accademia has always paid attention towards giving these young artists greater visibility and so, offers many opportunities for them to “meet the public”. Each year recitals and concerts — even in ensembles with teachers and students are organised and through collaborative agreements with other musical institutes, musical tournées are held in both in Italy and abroad.
The Settimana Musicale Senese, created in 1939 to give greater visibility to Italian composer who, in that period had passed into oblivion such as Vivaldi, and later Pergolesi, Caldara, Salieri, Rossini, Donizetti and Cherubini and has also given birth to renowned musical ensembles such as the Chigiano Quintet (later sextet). This year we celebrate its 67th edition and from the 9 – 17 July, Siena is stage to the Settimana Musicale Senese offering the public an entire week of classical music concerts.
The great names of the international music scenario will animate the summer evenings of Siena and the surrounding province. The programme is even richer with Maurizio Pollini’s prized concert (18 August, Teatro dei Rinnovati, now the 11th of such concerts held in Siena).
The Estate Chigiana also offers space to the programme “Maestri Chigiani in Terra di Siena”, which will take place from the 22 July to the 19 August and will take the excellent Chigiana music also to other cities such as San Gimignano, Pienza, Sovicille, Chiusi and Poggibonsi.
The 79th edition of Estate Musicale Chigiana will end on the 25 August at the Teatro dei Rinnovati in Siena with La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, performed by the Festival Orchestra of Sofia directed by students of the Chigiana Maestro Gianluigi Gelmetti.
Following the success of “Tosca”, “Cavalleria Rusticana”, “Gianni Schicchi” and “Suor Angelica”, for the fifth year running the Festival will terminate with the final recital of the orchestral conductor class which represents a unique opportunity for young talented conductors to perform by directing an opera with renowned soloists, singers and a prestigious orchestra.
