Cinema in Siena, natural set for movies
Posted on 24. Sep, 2015 by admin in Uncategorized
We take the opportunity of the upcoming Terra di Siena Film Festival, which will take place from 29th September 29 to 4th October, to celebrate our town as a natural set for movies of different genres.
As is known, photographers and filmmakers chose Siena because “captivated” by its charm, its wonderful churches, its romantic streets, elegant palaces and, more generally, the magic mood that reigns here every day.
Siena has been chosen as a set not only for historical films, but especially for stories set in the present day, due to the urban landscape and the daydream views that anyone who has visited the town remembers forever.
Would you like to spend a stay in Siena looking for movie sets? Find some ideas on this list of films shot in the town of Palio.
5 best movies shot in Siena
We start with the first movie shot in the town, Palio by Alessandro Blasetti (1932). This is the fifth movie by Blasetti, considered one of the founding fathers of modern Italian cinema. As you might guess from the title, the story takes place during the Palio of Siena.
Al lupo al lupo, starring and directed by Carlo Verdone in 1992, is set in Tuscany and some sequences were realized in Siena: it’s one of the best movies of this popular Italian actor.
Con gli occhi chiusi (1994), is directed by Francesca Archibugi and is based on the Federigo Tozzi’s novel , it boasts the participation of actors like Stefania Sandrelli and Marco Messeri, rewarded for his performance with the Nastro d’argento award.
Quantum of Solace, shot in 2008, is a James Bond movie, directed by Marc Forster and starring Daniel Craig as the world’s most famous secret agent.
Only the opening sequence is shot in Siena, but we recommend it for the unique way in which it was shot the Palio and the spectacular chase on the roofs of the town.
La città ideale (2012), starring and directed by Luigi Lo Cascio, was in competition at the Venice Film Festival. In this case, Siena isn’t just a background but it is a sort of protagonist of the story, for this we recommend watching this very original movie.
We hope to have intrigued you with this film selection and we recommend to go at Cinema Nuovo Pendola, where will take place screenings and events of Terra di Siena Film Festival from 29th September to 4th October, visit the official site for the full schedule: www.terradisienafilmfestival.eu
