Siena hosts not only churches, noble palaces, contradas and historical monuments, but also peculiar museums that offer to the curious traveller the chance to know some issues entertaining himself. Do you know that in Siena there is a National Museum of Antarctica?
This museum is open all the year round, a nice idea for an educational walking, discovering the most southern continent of the world. The museum has 3 venues and is also in Genoa and Trieste; in Siena there are the exhibition centre, the study centre and a documentation lab, with the aim to promote the finds of the scientific expeditions in Antarctica.
The location is at via del Laterino 8 since 2007, and guests a library with more than 4000 documents (books, dvd, magazines), 900 maps and collections of satellite pictures, rocks samples, meteorites, fossils and minerals. During the visit is possible to know more thanks to documentaries, interactive workstations and the observation of finds, as a travel to a far place that concern all of us.
In fact, the global climate changes are influenced by Antarctica, so is useful to spread the scientific discoveries obtained during expeditions. The museum is at free entrance and you can ask, by reservation, guided tours (also in english) and lessons about geology, meteorites and climate variations. An original way to visit South Pole without leave the center of Siena and understand how our planet is changed across the centuries.
