This year Siena will host the 10th Edition of the annual programme of Archaeological Evenings, a rich series of meetings organised at unusual times throughout the whole month of July. The programme offers exciting and novel opportunities to discover the millennial old history of Siena and the surrounding territory.
304 different events organised all over Tuscany in a month dedicated to the mysteries of archaeology revealed in the dusky light of the cool summer nights.
The 15 museums belonging to the Fondazione Musei Senesi have prepared a rich calendar of events through to the end of July and which also envisage the late opening of museums, parks and archaeological sites. In addition, visitors will also be able to attend conferences, laboratories, guided tours and even performances and archaeological treks — a ideal programme suited for all ages.
An appointment not to be missed is the late opening of the Archaeological Museum Santa Maria della Scala in Siena on the 16 July and Friday the 23 July and at 21:15 — a performance of Sleeping Beauty by the theatrical troupe Archètipo, directed by R. Massai — which is part of the theatrical programme of Archeologia narrante or Narrated Archaeology.
Free of cost guided visits will also be organised to the Santa Maria della Scala Museum as part of the event organised by the Region and Amat and this year we have a small but interesting exhibition on the theme “Tuscany and its great archaeologists”.
The exhibition focuses on the important studies of the archaeologist Bonaventura Chigi Zondadari, one of the most significant Sienese figures of the last part of the 1800’s and the collection which bears his name is also conserved in the museum. Other exhibitions dealing with the work of this illustrious archaeologist have also been organised by the archaeological museums of Colle di Val d’Elsa, Casole d’Elsa and San Gimignano. A Conference will also be dedicated to Bonaventura Chigi to be held on Thursday 22 July at 21:00 and entitled “Bonaventura Chigi Zondadari, the Sienese Archaeologist”. The exhibition will remain open until the 31 July from 10:30 to 18:00.
The Archaeological Evenings will conclude on Friday 29 July at 21:00 with a Conference by Marco Cavalieri, lecturer at the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) entitled: “The passage from Antiquity to the Middle Ages in the light of the recent archaeological discoveries in the Villa of Aiano-Torraccia in Chiusi”.
All events and entrance to the archaeological museum during the month of the Archaeological Evenings are free of charge.
