The masterpieces of Museo dell’Opera in Siena

Would you like to visit the historical complex of Duomo di Siena? Is one of the most renowned places in the city and, in occasion of the launch of an exhibition we talk about the museum. The exhibition, Resurrexi, is an itinerary among the artworks hosted by the Museum and the Crypt, it will be open from 1st March to 31st August 2013. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo is located next to the Cathedral, just where was planned the aisle of Duomo Nuovo which wasn’t built; the Museum was founded in 1180 and is one of the oldest institutions in Italy.
The scheduled exhibition it was conceived for Easter, because shows the last moments of Jesus Christ life through different kinds of artworks, as illuminated manuscripts and the paintings, a stunning tour for who wants to discover the Senese treasures.
The venues where Resurrexi will be host are an essential part of the exhibition, because the Crypt is decorated with frescoes and keep a pictorial cycle of stories from Old and New Testament. In the neighboring rooms there are the illuminated codes which are part of Easter liturgy. About Museo dell’Opera, inside an air-conditioned room there are the Episodes from Christ’s Passion painted by Duccio di Buoninsegna, author of the Maestà which dates back to 1311.
The Museum offers guided tours also for children, a funny way to discover these artworks under a different perspective. Among the others painters we mention Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Gregorio di Cecco, Sano di Pietro, Matteo di Giovanni, Domenico Beccafumi, Francesco di Valdambrino.
The OPA, of course, is open all the year around and our advice is to buy the all-inclusive ticket which includes the Baptistery, the Piccolomini’s Library, the Cathedral, the Oratorio S. Bernardino and the Museo Diocesano Arte Sacra. The great classics of Siena are a must during a prestigious stay: book in advance to spend an holiday in Tuscany in March.
