The victory of Onda (Wave) was an extraordinary achievement of the jockey Giovanni Atzeni, called Tittia, that also won the Palio of 2nd July with the Contrada of Oca. This is the summary of 16th August, the day of Palio dell’Assunta celebrated by all the Senese people and tourists that arrived for this important event.
The Onda won the the 40th Palio of its history thanks to a race lead since the second bend, followed by Nicchio and Torre, an unexpected triumph that excited the “contradaioli” (people of the Contrada), now involved in partying.
The drappellone is a banner, a symbol of Palio, and this time was painted by Cesare Olmastroni and Cecilia Rigacci, a craved trophy realized by different artists on every edition; they have to follow the rules about iconography and colors of the 10 contradas which join the competition.
The painting style is free and often people try to guess the next winner of Palio through the drawing on the banner. The Palio di Siena has to be seen with the heart in your mouth until the last instant, because everything can happen, like all the fast and captivating races.
Tittia won two Palios in a row, this time he rode Morosita Prima beating all the rivals with a great recovery, as you can see in the following video of the race.
Atzeni is about to become one of the most important jockeys of Palio history, like Aceto, Sardinian as him, holder of the record of 14 victories, followed by Cianchino (Salvatore Ladu di Bono), all witnesses of a tie between Sardinia and Siena.
