In Siena there are many places where to taste the local specialties, besides the nice restaurants and trattoria, unusual venues for demanding tourists. We suggest you two nice events which tell the history of town and its cuisine as a funny and interesting show.
The first tip is a contest between Guelphs and Ghibellines, that will take place at Enoteca Italiana on Friday 12th April, a battle among local dishes. The competition is entitled Montaperti a Tavola, because there, on 4th September 1260, the Guelphs of Florence fought against the Ghibellines of Siena and now this special dinner shows the differences between each class, in fact also gastronomy was a distinctive feature.
The dinner of 12th April consists of a contest among six restaurant: each one propose a dish and the participants can vote their own favorite dish, while the jury is composed by gastronomy experts. The restaurants are La Nave, Chiaroscuro and Pizzeria Napoli on behalf of Guelphs, Osteria del Castello, Ristorante Casalta and Ristorante Millevini on behalf of Ghibellines; the menu includes DOCG wines of Siena and Florence provinces. Book early at Enoteca Italiana to enjoy unique flavors calling the phone number 0577 247121.
The second advice is to visit Orto De’ Pecci, a very peculiar Senese location, where on Saturday 20th April is scheduled a theatrical performance during dinner, “I Misteri delle strade di Siena. Ovvero… Storie e leggende nascoste sotto le lastre”, an exciting tale by Giovanni Gennai with the live music of Hop Frog band. These are the dishes: appetizer from the vegetable garden, velvet leek soup, pici all’aglione (a kind of pasta), pork loin, flavored potatoes and vegetable, cake, water, wine and coffee, at only 25 euros.
It’s possible to ask dishes for vegetarians and celiacs; reservation is required at the phone numbers 0577 222201or 328 9683976. If you go to Siena in these days both the events are a chance to know more about Tuscan traditions and the myths related to this enchanting Medieval town.
