Our suggest for a out of town travel is the enchanting Monteriggioni, in the province of Siena, Medieval fortified town surrounded by a hillock and inside the walls by gardens that in the past were the sustenance for the population.
This ancient town, born in 1213, has a castle that was a front line against Florence, the historical rival of Siena. Now hosts art galleries and events all around the year, so you have many reasons to visit Monteriggioni.
The next events will be the exhibition “Terrible Softness / Terribile Morbidezza” by Ronald Moran, curated by Antonio Arévalo e Gaia Pasi, that opened on 14th May and will be opened until 20th June from Tuesday to Sunday at the following opening hours: 11:00 am – 02:00 pm / 03:00 pm – 08:00 pm. The exhibition is hosted by the Zak gallery inside the castle, where the Latin American artist shows his works (paintings, pictures, installations) featuring a double identity: using common objects covered with cotton wool, changed in a new shape.
Then will be, on 2nd June, the Republic Day, that will be celebrated at the castel and in Roma square with shows dedicated to the Italian Unification and the jobs of the past. At 11:00 am there will be games organized by the Cultural Association Agresto and at 3:00 pm the show of “Tamburini di Monteriggioni” and the theatre company Octava Rima will present “Fiabilandia”; the funny snakes and ladders game, deicated to Risorgimento, will start at 5:30 pm and is suitable for adults and children.
An unforgettable day to celebrate the history of Italy and the distinctive features of this enchanting town, waiting for the Medieval festival in July, Monteriggioni di torri si corona, which we will write about it.
For a weekend in the greenery or a origfinal destination, Monteriggioni can be a nice idea, after you have visited Siena and its contradas, also to discover a village quoted by Dante in the Divine Comedy.
