On October 31 there will be the National Urban Trekking Day, born in Siena in 2002, now involves 31 italian cities, a sustainable tourism project that is very popular and has Siena as a leader. Probably you may ask if urban trekking is a sport or not: is just about visiting a city by foot, wandering to discover historical places and part of the town known only by residents and often not included in the usual itineraries.
The necessity of a low impact tourism, that decongests historical centers, proclaims the urban trekking as original and trendy choice to live a city in a better way.
Siena is, one time again, on te cutting edge to promote innovative forms of trip and entertainment, infact the urban trekking was conceived from Assessorato al Turismo of Comune di Siena (specifically Donatella Cinelli Colombini) with the collaboration of Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena and Associazione Nazionale Guide Turistiche.
This events have every year a different theme, now is the turn of Risorgimental suggestions, preparing the 150° anniversary of Italian unification that will comes up in 2011. The itinerary proposed from the organizers has a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes, with different timetables to satisfy everyone needs.
The starting point is the hall of Resurgence at Piazza del Campo, where frescos show the historical meet between the king Vittorio Emanuele II and Garibaldi in Teano; after the route continues to Piazza Indipendenza and other places where patriots secretly met to plan an Italy that didn’t exist yet . The walking will ends nearby the Medicea Fortress, that the “garibaldini” patriots wanted to pull down because they considerated it a symbol of Grand Duchy oppression.
Trying the urban trekking can be an instructive and funny experience, good to know a new face of Siena with all your “senses”: walking through the city and slowly tasting the local flavors.
Furthermore, this practice is suitable for everyone and doesn’t needs a training: there aren’t limits of age and you can do it in every moment of the day. A lot of doctors suggests this form of trekking because tones up body and mind, in other words is an antidote to stress and frantic life.
The appointment is for the next sunday, October 31, in Siena, to explore together the city and to admire it from a different perspective. Only one recommendation, wearing comfortable shoes is better!
