Val d’Orcia top sights, explore the happy valley near Siena

The route that we offer you concerns the Val d’Orcia, a vast land that is worth a visit especially in autumn, thanks to the Festival of Terre di Siena, an initiative that enhances the most beautiful places of the valley with guided tours and trekking activities suitable to all.
If you are wondering when to come to Val d’Orcia, the entire month of October is a great time for both the climate and for the enogastronomical specialties you can taste in Siena and province.
Furthermore, Val d’Orcia is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Tuscany, selected because of the landscapes that have fired the imagination of the Senese painters in the Renaissance age and how this land has influenced artists in the following centuries.
The peculiarities of the valley to keep in mind are: the river Orcia, which gives its name to the entire area, the cypress tree, characteristic of the landscape, the Doc wine Orcia, the typical foods like Cinta Senese, pecorino cheese and the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino.
What to see in Val d’Orcia in autumn
Discover in detail the events of Festival Unesco of Terre di Siena, scheduled on weekends. For all the events it is recommended to wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for long walks: on Saturday 24th October the guided route will start from Radicofani, a small town that was visited by Charles Dickens, who wrote about it in his book Picture of Italy.
The meeting is scheduled at 2:00 pm at the Church of San Pietro, and then you will go towards Ponte a Rigo, where you can see a wonderful view of Mount Amiata; at the end of the tour, you should come back by private cars.
The next nature trail tour will be on Friday 30th October in Montalcino; hence, more precisely from the roundabout near the Fortress, at 9:30 am it will start the trekking tour that will lead you to Sant’Antimo, the place where stands the Abbey built in Romanesque style, important evidence of the XII century.
The comeback will be is by bus, departing at 2:26 pm.
On Sunday 1st November there will be the last guided itinerary, focused on Castiglione d’Orcia. You can explore the village starting from Piazza Vecchietta, then follow the path called “ring” because it surrounds Castiglione and is about 6 km long.
The event will start at 10:00 am and will end in the center of Castiglione d’Orcia, one of the most beautiful places in the valley, perched on a hill and known also for Tentennano Fortress, medieval building standing above the village, offering a great view than worth a visit.
